I think it's great that you took the time to contact the owner, but am saddened by the fact that you didn't take the time to let anyone else know how they could go about adopting this dog in your public forum. Sure we could contact you, but that would leave out the opportunity to begin the networking that could happen for the dog to be adopted. Your desire to reprimand the owner may have gotten in the way of your wanting to truly help this dog.

I think it's hilariously sad that you folks feel the need to target an animal shelter that rescues our animals and make a bunch of extremely broad, baseless assumptions based on the photos of one animal. You cannot assume that it's abuse because a stressed out animal loses weight in a facility that it must be kept in, full of other animals it very likely was afraid of. Why don't you ASK them why the dog was losing weight from the people who work there, instead of raging like brainless idiots over something you are assuming off of one enraged person who very clearly stated that all she has is photographs from one month to the next, and didn't bother to do the research and ASK the source themselves?

So sad. I've been spending weeks looking for pets and CCAC was one place I went. They treated the animals with respect, had them on strict schedules to feed them, give them rest and quiet, fresh air, everything. They DID feed the animals based on their charts. Many of the animals had been there for months though (the one I'd been looking at had been there 6 months) so obviously they don't euthanize after a few weeks- and them being forced to euthanize at all isn't their faults, it's the idiots who decide to bring a pet into a home and forget about them.

Chris,
Have you read Official Code of Georgia chapter 4-11-9
In this section of law you will find that while the state does not specifically prohibit euthanasia it restricts the practice to animals matching a narrow set of criteria, and in the opinion of a licensed veterinarian.
Most county and municipal agencies ignore this law because killing animals is much easier than getting them rescued, and no one is stepping up to challenge them in the proper court of law, which I believe is criminal court. Every healthy animal they kill is a criminal act of animal cruelty, as that is defined in the Georgia codes. It is a misdemeanor punishable by fine and imprisonment. Put a few power happy AC directors in prison and you will see things change instantly.
Your website indicates you are experienced in the hi-kill versus no-kill battle and I would appreciate your opinion on this legal position.
Your website is quite impressive.
Thanks

Chris, I found your blog as I was doing some LivingSocial research. It's great, but I see you haven't posted since Nov. Hope you will post again soon; I attended a tech talk last night at Spotify where the topic was Cassandra. If you have anything to say about "big/unstructured data" and NoSQL databases, I'd love to hear that, but would be glad to see any updates, just hope you keep it going, as time allows. Thanks!

As far as I know,CCAC does not treat the dogs for tapeworm, because many dogs from there seem to have them, at least the ones I've pulled for rescue. Worms cause diarrhea which can cause the workers to withhold food hoping the dog gets better, or in order to avoid having to clean up.The vet does spay and neuter, but treating worms should also be done, which would help the dog keep the weight on, and there won't be a reason to withhold food.(witholding food doesn't rid worms-I'm just stating what I've heard).

All of your opinions mean zip- same for your observations. Get an employee off to one side and you'll hear the truth. But they won't publish it because they know they'll be reprimanded, lose pay or be fired. It's already happened. It's a big coverup at CCAC- believe it. A good show for the public. They are killing dogs whenever it suits them- two JR's just killed that had rescue. It happens all the time. If that vet is ethical she knows what's happening and should be telling the truth.
Get rid of DB and JP and SW. Cruel people.

I have also visited this shelter many times, and I am always struck by how well the animals are kept. It is well-lit, extremely clean, and the animals are in excellent condition, given their circumstances. It is one of the few shelters that has a full-time vet on staff. And best of all, they don't keep a "death row" the way some county shelters do. A dog has a fighting chance there, unlike other places. The Cobb shelter has kept dogs as long as six months or more in hopes they would find loving homes. I've seen dogs that were too stressed to eat, but I've never seen the adults who work there mistreating any animal. On the contrary, if you've ever met the Captain, then you know any report of such would be handled swiftly and severely. So, please stop sullying he name of the Cobb Animal Shelter. They are trying their best to fill the gap that the COMMUNITY of Cobb County has created. Spay and neuter your pets ... yes, neuter your pets (those are your dog's testicles, not yours) ... and don't buy while homeless pets die.

Fact: Animals do NOT starve themselves to death, any 'vet' that says this should be fired on the spot!
Fact: Kimi did NOT have worms or any other physical ailments which could have contributed to her drastic weight loss (I have the vet paperwork to prove this - a PROPER vet)
Fact: Not all the cages have feeding instructions on them - I have photographic and video evidence of such that I took only yesterday (Sept 28th)
Fact: There are other emaciated dogs in there that DO wish to eat - I have video evidence of them devouring treats that I gave them when I visited yesterday. I am not going to tell you which dog/s on this post for fear that CCAC will hide them, in lock down (as they have done with the other emaciated dogs all of a sudden) or kill them. However these videos are on the web already.

Frankly I have not the time to play silly political games. I saw, and was made aware of Kimi for the FIRST on Sunday (assuming she was just another owner abuse case). I was appalled to find out that this has happened inside a 'shelter' type facility. I care not what excuses people give - it is unacceptable, period! If this dog was on private property, you can bet someone would have been arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

When something is wrong, I say it how it is for the sake of the animals. I have the facts in front of me and will continue to fight until the care of ANY animals (regardless of where they are housed), is up to an acceptable standard for this day and age, in the Western World. Georgia, and other southern states need to open their eyes and see that animals are treated as poorly here as they are in some third world countries.

I have seen this condition a hundred times in shelter dogs. It even happens in bonofide boarding kennels when an owner goes on a long vacation (more than two weeks). The animal goes into shock and they can't or won't eat. In boarding situations it is not uncommon to see staff grind up kibble mix it with some canned food and hand feed the dog. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to do that in an over crowded shelter. Volunteers are overwhelmed by the work needed to keep the kennels sanitary alone. Feeding by hand is just impossble
